Dr. E. F. Noyes' Soothing Salve

When the town of Baggs, Wyo., and the surrounding area, ran out of the "burn" salve in 2003, our family was contacted to start production again. Because we had the original formula from 1918, the ingredients have been in the public domain for over 100 years, and and the ingredients could be obtained through a local compounding pharmacist, we began to make this soothing salve.

All of the ingredients are known minerals in a base of petroleum jelly/petrolatum. The salve has both antiseptic and astringent properties. Historically, has be used for both first and second degree burns and contact dermatitis irritations such as poison ivy or insect bites, chapped skin--minor, self-limiting conditions of the skin.

Depending on how badly the skin is damaged, burns are categorized as first-, second-, or third-degree. First-degree burns are the mildest of the three and are limited to the top layer of skin. They can produce redness, pain and minor swelling, but the skin remains dry and blister-free.

Second-degree burns are more serious and involve the skin layer below the top layer. These burns also produce redness, but are accompanied by severe pain, redness and blisters. The blisters can break open and cause the area to appear “wet” with a bright pink or red color.

Dr. Noyes’ Soothing Salve temporarily protects minor cuts, scrapes, burns; reduces itch from insect bites or stings; dries oozing and weeping of poison oak, ivy, sumac; and relieves dry, chapped skin. Avoid eyes or mucous membranes and do not use on deep wounds or punctures, animal bites or serious burns; avoid large, raw areas.

Dr. Noyes’ Soothing Salve should be kept out of the reach of children. Always consult your doctor IF condition doesn't improve in a day or so or IF it worsens. For external use only.
